North-Facing vs South-Facing House in Pakistan: Which Plot Facing Is Best and How to Design for It

Two identical houses on the same street can feel completely different inside because of which way they face. At Islamabad and Rawalpindi’s latitude, around 33°N, the sun’s path is predictable — and designing around it makes a house cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and cheaper to run. Try your own plot in the Plot Orientation Guide.

How the sun moves over the Twin Cities

  • The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, but it travels across the southern part of the sky.
  • In winter it stays low in the south, so south-facing walls and windows receive warm, welcome sunlight.
  • In summer it climbs high, and the west side of a house takes the strongest, hottest late-afternoon sun.

So: south is the “sunny side”, west is the “hot side”, north is the “cool side”, east gets gentle morning light.

“Facing” means the road side

When people say a plot is north-facing, they mean the front — the road side — faces north. The back of the house then faces south.

North-facing and north-east facing plots

The front stays cooler and free of glare; the rear (south) gets the sun.

  • Put the lawn, courtyard and main living room at the rear to catch winter sun.
  • Larger front windows are comfortable because they face away from the sun.
  • The rear roof faces south — ideal for solar panels.

These are often the most sought-after facings for comfort.

East-facing plots

Gentle morning sun at the front; the rear faces west and takes the afternoon heat.

  • Bedrooms at the front wake up to soft light.
  • Shade the rear windows — deep reveals, verandas or trees.

South and south-east facing plots

The front gets sun most of the day — lovely in winter, hot in summer.

  • A front lawn stays sunny and dry.
  • Keep bedrooms at the rear (north) for cooler nights.
  • Shade the front with a porch, deep sills or jaali.

West and south-west facing plots

The front takes the harshest afternoon sun in summer. They are perfectly buildable, but need more care:

  • Minimise large west-facing glass, or use shading and double glazing.
  • Put stairs, stores, bathrooms and the kitchen on the west side as a heat buffer.
  • Insulate the roof and west wall, and plant trees in the front setback.

Room placement at a glance

  • Living room — the side that gets winter sun, usually the south side.
  • Bedrooms — north or east for cooler nights and gentle morning light.
  • Kitchen — where cross-ventilation is good; avoid the hottest west wall for long cooking hours in summer if possible.
  • Stairs and services — on the west to shield living spaces.
  • Lawn — on the south side for winter sun.

Ventilation

Cross-ventilation — openings on opposite sides of a room — does more for summer comfort than almost anything else. A central stair or light well can pull hot air up and out.

Solar panels and orientation

Panels produce the most over a year facing south at about 30° tilt; east or west-facing arrays lose roughly a tenth. Plan the south side of the roof clear of water tanks and the stair tower. See our rooftop solar guide and the Rooftop Solar Planner.

Setbacks and neighbours matter too

A tall neighbour to the south can shade your lawn and roof all winter; a wide road in front can open a hot facing to more sun. Check the setbacks your society allows with the Buildable Area calculator, and before you buy, visit the plot at different times of day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which facing house is best in Pakistan?+

North and north-east facing houses are generally the most comfortable at Pakistan’s latitude, because the front avoids harsh sun and the rear gets winter sunlight. Any facing can be comfortable with good design.

Is a west-facing house hot?+

The front of a west-facing house takes the hottest late-afternoon sun in summer, so it needs shading, insulation and service rooms on the west side.

Where should the lawn be in a north-facing house?+

At the rear, on the south side, where it gets winter sun.

Which side of the roof is best for solar panels in Pakistan?+

The south side, tilted at about 30°. East or west-facing panels produce roughly a tenth less over a year.

What does a north-facing plot mean?+

That the front of the plot — the road side — faces north, so the back of the house faces south.
